All they want for Christmas is little baby to play Jesus

Producers of a North Somerset nativity are looking for a little cherub to play baby Jesus in its Christmas show.

And it can be a baby boy or girl!

Noah’s Ark zoo farm near Nailsea is searching for a star in the making to take the central part in its nativity.

The zoo farm has already cast live animals in the stable scene which features real donkeys, goats and cows in a seasonal setting.

But now is has put out a casting call to find baby Jesus and invites families from Bristol, Somerset and South Wales to come forward to audition for the leading part.

The zoo is looking for two babies to share the role across three performances.

One performance is on Saturday, December 12 and two are on Saturday, December 19.

The babies will be ‘paid’ in kind with a free family pass.

Contact Noah’s Ark on 01275 852606 and press option 2 to speak to the casting office.

This year sees a more varied nativity programme for the audience in the 500-seater Ark Arena.

The first is an interactive performance at 2.30pm on Saturday, December 12 with the choir from St Peter's Church of England Primary School at Portishead.

Then on Saturday, December 19, there are two more traditional productions with the talented team at Nailsea Baptist Church at 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

December visitors can enjoy a pre show tour to see the big zoo animals including elephants, big cats and rhinos before warming up with a hot drink to watch the family-friendly festive plays.

Noah’s Ark is offering 20 per cent off all day ticket admissions during December and January, with the Nativity plays included free of charge.

Day tickets can be purchased online or on the gate.

Due to the popularity of the nativity plays the park advises visitors to get to the Ark Arena at least 15 minutes before the performance times

Noah’s Ark zoo farm is open daily from 10.30am- 4pm Monday to Saturday in December and January.

It is closed for the Christmas fortnight from Friday, December 25.

LIDL REFUSED

The planning application first lodged a year ago with North Somerset Council  by Lidl to build a budget store at Stockway South, Nailsea, has finally been formally refused this week. The three reason given are inadequate customer parking, unsatisfactory access for delivery vehicles and loss of mature landscaping incuding trees.

DOGGONE

New Nailsea landlords have been experiencing a bit of flak from concerned tenants. Dogs Palace owner Carolyn Price upped sticks and moved to Portishead claiming ‘sky high rents and business rates’ drove her out of Nailsea. And then to add insult to injury she was refused permission to put a ‘moved to Portishead’ notice in her old High Street shop. The Arcade at Nailsea which was on the market for £750,000 has been sold. But one of the first acts by property investment company Kindale Ltd was to shut Decades nightclub. Jem Imry who ran the popular upstairs venue for six years said: “Decades was great while it lasted.” He added he hoped to see all his customers again ‘in another premises if I ever find one’. The Atrium restaurant remains closed after its landlord was declared bankrupt and Gilly and Danny Chu have put the lease of their Ivy Court bisto and cafe up for sale citing ‘ill health’ after strife about opening hours and alcohol licence with new leaseholders.

YOUTH HOUSE TO CLOSE

At the 2014 annual meeting of Nailsea Town Council then chairman Clare Hunt said: “The young people of Nailsea also deserve somewhere to call home.” Well, it is back on the agenda that Youth House may close and the High Street property sold by North Somerset Council. The brainchild of former area youth officer Maurice Thornton the pioneering youth club has been under threat of closure for nearly a decade but since the district council stopped funding youth services the threat is more real than ever...watch this space. Foreal currently has a contract to provide Monday evening activities thanks to town council cash.

NAILSEA SCHOOL OLD GIRL MP

Former Nailsea School old girl and now Conservative MP Claire Perry for Devizes has been slated in the tabloids for wasting police time. Mrs Perry, aged 51, who went to Brasenose College Oxford and graduated with a geography degree was accused of wasting police time when she claimed she was assaulted by a Labour opponent who tapped her on the shoulder at her supermarket surgery during a anti-austerity protest.

FAIRER SCHOOL FUNDING

Weston MP John Penrose is celebrating the end of a long campaign to win Fairer Funding for Schools as the Chancellor, George Osborne, announces the Government will introduce a proper National Funding Formula for the first time. The seaside MP wanted to get a funding gap which saw Weston get £138 less education cash per pupil than Bath, £625 less than Bristol, and a whopping £2,628 less than Tower Hamlets closed. Nailsea School head teacher Chris Wade said: “We are very poorly funded by comparison to other authorities. Sadly with the drop in pupil numbers in the town the potential rise is funding will probably be too little, too late.”

WATER PROJECT ENDS

The Nailsea/Uganda Water Project has ended after a successful three years fundraising. Spokesman Roger Evans announced this week: “So many people are now drinking clean water, living more hygienically and so having less illnesses. Also the young people are getting to school on time and not getting hurt carrying the containers of water. So thank you – without you we would not have been able to achieve so much.” The group with massive support from the community raised £95,500.

Okay relatively speaking former Nailsea schoolboy George Shelley didn’t win I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! but as last man standing we reckon he deserves the title King of the Jungle.

The public loved the Union J boy band member who proved himself personable as able even if he did have a few wobbles in the jungle.

He performed admirably as Camp Leader, did a dastardly Bushtucker Trial and stayed out of the petty bickering enjoyed by the Alpha bushmen.

The celebrity show set in the Australian jungle has been showing live nightly on ITV.

But George and his mum Toni have arrived home and www.nailseapeople.com has put together the slideshow of his time on the testing reality contest.

Joining George at the start of the new series competing for the King or Queen of the Jungle title were Duncan Bannatyne, Lady Colin Campbell, Susannah Constantine, Kieron Dyer, Tony Hadley, Yvette Fielding, Chris Eubank, Brian Friedman, Spencer Matthews, Ferne McCann, Jorgie Porter and Vicky Pattison.

Vicky, Ferne and George were the last three as the others had been voted off apart from two who walked for various reasons.

Before going into camp George, aged 22, admitted being scared of moths and said he’ll miss his bed, home comforts and his mum Toni.

But his mum had a whale of a time after travelling to Australia business class and being put up in a five star hotel down the road to deliver George a letter from home.

Toni was been seen out and about shopping with Duncan Bannatyne’s 36-year-old girlfriend Nigora Whitehorn and was pictured giving Susannah Constantine a hug for ‘looking after my boy’ while in jungle.

Toni spearheaded the voting campaign by invited lots of lots friends to join her Facebook page 'George Shelley in the Jungle' and fans could download an app which allowed them to vote for free.

After the debut broadcast she posted on FB: "I am going to try and sleep now.

"A massive thank you to you all for your support on the first night.

“I hope you all feel the buzz and that my George is bringing you all some magic into your lives, and that this page makes you feel part of it, because believe me you are...big time."

George was born at Southmead hospital and his first home was in Clevedon where his mum Toni grew up.

But his somewhat nomadic early years led him to go to nursery school at Happy Hours, Nailsea; Backwell Infant School; Golden Valley Primary School at Nailsea and then to Yeo Moor Junior School at Clevedon.

He began secondary school in Burnham before transferring to Kings of Wessex at Cheddar and after taking a successful BTEC in graphic design at Weston College was about to start a second year at Bath Spa University.

So his roots and in Somerset while his future is Down Under and the unknown!

By royal approval

HRH The Princess Royal had a double date in North Somerset on Thursday, December 17.

First Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal went to Bristol Airport to open its multi-million pound terminal extension.

And then she went to Noah’s Ark zoo farm at Wraxall near Nailsea to officiate at grand opening of Elephant Eden.

News in Brief.jpg

George 2nd in line to throne

The boy band bachelor believed his jungle experience was going to be worse that appearing live on The X Factor. Before he left the UK George said: “I am really excited about being on the show and it actually feels really surreal!

“I can’t quite believe I am going to be on it.

“It’s going to be so different to life with Union J.

“It’s a great change from singing but it’s definitely going to be way more scary than performing on stage.

“I know it sounds ridiculous to have a phobia of moths but I do.

“As a child, I got told a story about how moths are the ghosts of ancestors or something and there is a video of me running away from a moth, it’s hilarious.

“What trials am I dreading then? Ones that involve four-legged animals.”

Last year saw motorcycle racer Carl Fogarty crowned King of The Jungle, with Jake Quickenden as runner up.

The series saw Michael Buerk rapping with Tinchy Stryder, Kendra Wilkinson and Edwina Currie falling out in spectacular style and Gemma Collins going jungle AWOL after only a few days in camp.

During this show George has been romantically linked with Jorgie and Vicky but everyone is hoping his relationship with Ferne may substain.

Porter and George Shelley set for a jungle romance?

Presenters and real stars of the show Ant and Dec gave all the gossip from the jungle while overseeing those infamous Bushtucker Trials.
