Student sings with West End stars
Backwell School student Lacey Sell was chosen to sing with a Welsh choir and West End stars at Cardiff Castle this summer.
A Night Under The Stars was on a weekiend in August at the iconic venue across the bridge.
Mum Kate Francomb said: "She had to audition and beats hundreds and hundreds of other kids to get through so as you can imagine I’m super proud."
It is one year on since live performance was stopped due to the Covid19 pandemic a plethora of musical stars were in the line-up including Sophie Evans (Wizard of Oz, Wicked), Lucie Jones (Les Miserables, Legally Blonde, Waitress), Caroline Sheen (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins), David Thaxton (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables) and Gruffydd Wyn (Britains Got Talent, Can I Gymru) for a one-off concert of songs and music from the West End within the iconic walls of Cardiff Castle.
Critic Andy Howells praised the production and all the performers.
He said: "The production curated and conducted by Cardiff born Matt Brind, featured musical accompaniment from The Welsh Pops Orchestra and the vibrant Bring Them Home Youth Choir, made up of youngsters from across Wales brought together for the event."
Someone needed to tell him Lacey from Nailsea was singing too!
Andy said: "The concert opened with an incredible ensemble performance of From Now On, displaying that the on-stage performers were going to deliver with energy and charisma despite the weather.
"In fact, after a short while, the weather relented as those of us sporting cagoules literally took the spirit of Caroline Sheen’s rendition of Don’t Rain on My Parade to our hearts."
Lacey, aged 15, who is a pupil at Tillies School of Performing Arts and has won many accolades for her trampolining skills applied after mum mum spotted an article about auditioning to be part of a 24-strong youth choir.
Kate added: "Lacey was sent lots of songs to learn and then spent two intense days rehearsing in Cardiff learning songs amd dance routines and then performed Saturday and Sunday at Cardiff Castle to sold out audiences and it was just amazing we are so proud of her as she had to work super hard.
"Lacey was the only child that wasn’t from Wales to make it into the choir."
