Bristol Airport firefighter role

Bristol Airport is recruiting firefighters to join its Fire & Rescue Service.

The role of a Bristol Airport Firefighter is not what you would expect.  

Despite its name, it is not all about fighting fires. 

While responding to emergency situations and requests for help will be part of the job, being a firefighter involves so much more.  

Successful applicants will take part in emergency response simulation exercises, deliver training workshops to colleagues on first aid, manual handling and general safety, promoting fire safety standards to airport colleagues and be able to keep a cool head in a crisis.

Bristol Airport is looking for people who can work as part of a team, have different strengths and experiences, are self-motivated, with good levels of fitness and stamina and able to work under pressure. 

No previous experience is necessary as all training will be provided through an extensive on-the-job training programme.

A Weston-super-Mare based company, the Ascot Group, has announced plans to expand its operations resulting in dozens of new jobs.

The group has grown from a start-up business to 70 employees and operates within the marketing, media and technology sectors.

The newly created roles will span everything from digital marketing and data analytics to more traditional positions such as graphic design and copy writing.

Twenty new full-time jobs are being created at Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier as it gears up for the traditional start of the new holiday season in a few weeks’ time.

The popular seafront attraction traditionally recruits a large number of seasonal workers, which it is again seeking to do this year.

But in addition, it is making a significant investment by offering 20 new full-time positions.

Details of all the vacancies can be discussed at two recruitment days which are taking place at the Pier on Monday and Tuesday, March 25-26, 2-6pm.

Grand Pier general manager Tim Moyle said: “Every year we recruit a number of occasional staff to help out in our busiest periods.

“Our payroll can go from around 100 usually to 320 in August.

"But in addition to the usual occasional staff, we have decided to invest in 20 new permanent positions, which is something different.

“Our intention would be for these staff to become multi-skilled and experienced in many different aspects of the Pier’s operations, from various retail roles to staffing the rides, these staff will train across all our various departments.

“It might be that if someone excels in a particular area, or shows particular enthusiasm or ability in a specific area, they can stay there but the intention is for them to become multi-skilled.”

Attendees, who are encouraged to bring their CVs, will be able to speak to heads of department and find out about all the recruitment opportunities across the company.

Mr Moyle added: “Our ideal candidates are people who are hard-working and willing to learn.”

The playscheme needs enthusiastic, hard-working individuals,who love to work with children and as part of a team.

Qualifications in teaching, NNEB, NVQ level 3 in childcare or similar are desirable for some positions, along with first aid qualifications.

Previous experience in sports provision plus experience in managing staff and groups of children is needed for senior roles.
In all roles a DBS check must be provided for successful applicants.

A new app to allow people to share skills is attracting interest among Nailsea People.
Beebooked is an initiative by Bristol based OneBigCircle a bespoke technical solutions company.
The Beebooked app is designed to help people trade their skills and earn money in hours that work for them, in turn allowing people to find help and skills when they need them. 
Marketing person Bethany Marris said: "Most of our users are in the Nailsea area at present - nearly 60 to date.
"Beebooked was created to help people find the services they need when they need them, and also enables people to trade your skills in their community - creating a hive of local activity.

Bristol Airport jobs fairs

Bristol Airport is hosting two new jobs fairs to showcase the range of job opportunities on offer in its industry.

The airport will be teaming up with business partners based across its site at the two events – one in February and one in March, giving prospective candidates the chance to find out more about the different roles available and the skills and experience required.

Approximately 4,000 people are employed at the airport, which handled more than 8.7 million passengers in 2018. 

But, with approval to develop facilities to handle up to 10 million passengers per annum in the future, the workforce is forecast to grow.

The jobs fairs will provide a ‘one stop shop’ for anyone interested in working at the airport, with many of the different employers on site represented, including security provider, ICTS, food travel experts - SSP and The Restaurant Group (TRG), ground-handling specialists, DHL and Swissport and duty-free shopping operator, World Duty Free.

Jobs on offer range across customer service, security, catering and retail, many of which are shift work roles on a permanent and fixed term seasonal basis and will be held 10am-1pm on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, February 26, at Weston College, Knightstone Campus; and

  • Thursday, March 7, at South Bristol Skills Academy, Hengrove Park.
