Wales & West Utilities has launched its award winning apprenticeship programme to recruit into engineering-based roles across Wales and the south west of England.
The company, which operates and maintains the gas network across the area, has launched its recruitment drive during the February National Apprenticeship Week and is now seeking applications into a range of skilled roles including mechanical engineering, pipelines engineering and electrical and instrumentation.
All roles will support Wales & West Utilities multi-million-pound investment work to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.
The 2025 intake will focus on training new apprentices to maintain existing equipment, lay new supply pipes, and maintain the control systems of the network – which play an increasingly important role in enabling the company to transport greener gas.
Apprentices will be based across the company’s operating area, from Wrexham to Redruth, and will go through the three/four-year programme to develop the skills needed to keep the network operating safely, now and into the future.
National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals and businesses, as well as recognising the skills and talent apprentices can bring to the workplace.
Wales & West Utilities has run its CIPD award-winning apprenticeship programme since it started operations in 2005.
During this time it has recruited nearly 200 apprentices from across Wales and the south west of England, with permanent employment with the company post-programme available for those who complete the programme.
Wales & West Utilities head of people & engagement Bethan Jones said: “We’re delighted to launch this year’s programme during National Apprenticeship Week and urge anyone interested in pursuing the opportunity to earn whilst they learn, to apply.
“Our apprenticeship programme has grown significantly over the years and we’re proud that the majority of these individuals are still working with us, some at management or senior roles within the business.
Apprenticeship week 2025

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by highlighting the valuable contribution apprentices play in helping deliver dedicated patient care across the region.
National Apprenticeship Week runs from Monday to Sunday, February 10-16, and shines a light on the fantastic work being done by employers and apprentices across the country.
SWASFT currently has over 250 apprentices, from paramedic apprentices to cyber security and finance apprentices who help support the operational side of the ambulance service.
SWASFT apprenticship lead Rich Francis said: "Apprenticeships are absolutely vital for the future of the ambulance service.
"They provide a fantastic opportunity for individuals to gain valuable skills and experience while contributing directly to patient care. By investing in our apprentices, we are not only developing a highly skilled workforce but also ensuring that we have the capacity to meet the evolving needs of our communities now and in the future.”
The paramedic apprenticeship is aimed at individuals who want to become fully qualified paramedics, without going via the traditional university route.
As a paramedic apprentice, they are trained to respond to emergency calls, provide advanced medical care, and make critical decisions under pressure.
Apprentices undergo intensive practical and theoretical training, including clinical placements and classroom study in subjects like pharmacology, patient assessment, and advanced life support techniques.
Rich added: “Our organisation has been utilising the Paramedic degree apprenticeship since January 2021, with over 305 paramedic apprentices enrolled to date.
"With strategic workforce plans in place, we aim to have 565 paramedic apprentices integrated into our workforce by 2029/2030, enrolling 120 paramedic apprentices annually.”
SWASFT paramedic apprenticeship student Mark Walker said: “Over the course of the apprenticeship, I have come to understand the full role of being a Paramedic and have a newfound respect for those who make it look so ‘easy.
“The skills I have been taught along the with self-learning mean that I have now confidently led many serious incidents and come away feeling fulfilled and proud of my role.”
In October 2024, the Trust was a finalist at the Apprenticeship Awards Regional Finals in the Large Employer of the Year category.
“Recruiting the next generation of gas engineers is essential so we can meet the challenges of the future, and all apprentices will play their part in working to maintain the network, so that we continue to provide the safe and reliable the energy needed to heat homes, power businesses and keep the lights on.”
