Avon Fire & Rescue Service opens its recruitment doors looking for aspiring and diverse firefighters

People from across our vibrant communities are being encouraged to apply to become a wholetime firefighter, as Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) once again opens its doors, looking for those who want to make a difference to join the service.

During the next three months, AF&RS will be hosting a range of recruitment activity to explore the role of a firefighter, give an idea of what it is like to be part of the Service, as well as provide insight into what is required throughout the application process.

It is hoped that applications will be received from members of our communities across our Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset communities, as well as from our more under-represented communities.

Lego team building interview challenge

It wasn't that long ago the standard interview question was 'where do you see yourself in five years time?' and the standard answer was 'sitting where you are'.

But two men have clinched jobs as IT developers with an online energy switching business Flipper by demonstrating their skills with Lego building blocks.

James Brown and Ollie Spires,pictured, are now working at the headquarters of energy auto-switching service Flipper, based at 1 Clevedon Road, Nailsea.

They impressed the bosses at an unusual interview aimed at finding out how they worked together and solved problems.

Instead of being subjected to the normal question and answer interview process, all the candidates for these roles were challenged to work in groups of three to create a Lego house in just 20 minutes.

Flipper head of technology Tim Genge devised the challenge.

He said: “The qualifications listed on a CV only tell you so much about a person, which courses they have attended and the technical knowledge they might have.

“We wanted to test their softer skills.

"See how they work with others, if they are leaders or followers, how good are they at problem solving and explaining their ideas to others.

"And, very importantly, if they would fit in with the rest of our team.”

The groups were given details of an imaginary Lego family and their requirements for a home. Flipper management team then watched each group as they discussed and constructed the house to a tight deadline.

Having successfully completed the task, James and Ollie now work as web developers and are part of the team who constantly improve the Flipper platform, which searches out the best gas and electricity deals and manages the switching process for households signed up to the service.

Flipper managing director Mark Gutteridge said: “There are more and more tech firms basing themselves in Bristol and the South West which has created a really dynamic market with lots of roles and lots of people applying for each one.

"By taking an innovative approach to recruitment we make ourselves memorable to the candidates and ensure we attract high calibre people – like James and Ollie.”

Every person who joins Flipper is presented with their own Lego minifigure, which not only looks like them but is also used as part of a fun staff incentive programme.

Each week outstanding employees from across the business are presented the ‘Flipping Fantastic’ award which sees their Lego figure promoted to stand on a special Lego plinth and given a Lego trophy at the company’s headquarters.

Many Nailsea civil servants remember the team building technique with Lego as part of their London induction training back in the 1970s.

Bristol Airport firefighter role

Bristol Airport is recruiting firefighters to join its Fire & Rescue Service.

The role of a Bristol Airport Firefighter is not what you would expect.  

Despite its name, it is not all about fighting fires. 

While responding to emergency situations and requests for help will be part of the job, being a firefighter involves so much more.  

Successful applicants will take part in emergency response simulation exercises, deliver training workshops to colleagues on first aid, manual handling and general safety, promoting fire safety standards to airport colleagues and be able to keep a cool head in a crisis.

The popular seafront attraction traditionally recruits a large number of seasonal workers, which it is again seeking to do this year.

But in addition, it is making a significant investment by offering 20 new full-time positions.

Bristol Airport jobs fairs

Bristol Airport is hosting two new jobs fairs to showcase the range of job opportunities on offer in its industry.

The airport will be teaming up with business partners based across its site at the two events – one in February and one in March, giving prospective candidates the chance to find out more about the different roles available and the skills and experience required.

Approximately 4,000 people are employed at the airport, which handled more than 8.7 million passengers in 2018. 

But, with approval to develop facilities to handle up to 10 million passengers per annum in the future, the workforce is forecast to grow.

The jobs fairs will provide a ‘one stop shop’ for anyone interested in working at the airport, with many of the different employers on site represented, including security provider, ICTS, food travel experts - SSP and The Restaurant Group (TRG), ground-handling specialists, DHL and Swissport and duty-free shopping operator, World Duty Free.

Jobs on offer range across customer service, security, catering and retail, many of which are shift work roles on a permanent and fixed term seasonal basis and will be held 10am-1pm on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, February 26, at Weston College, Knightstone Campus; and

  • Thursday, March 7, at South Bristol Skills Academy, Hengrove Park.
