This is the story of how a loving community is remembering one of its best boys, Toby Riley.

Toby a son, brother, BFF, football player/coach, skateboarder and all-round good egg died on July 4, 2021, aged just 18.

Everyone came together for Toby’s Fun Day raising a staggering amount of money for good causes and good ideas.

For Young Minds charity it was £4,600 and towards an outdoor activity area it was £23,900 making a grand total or £28,500.

There were 600 runners of all ages who signed up beforehand online and a further75 on the day.

And an auction raised an amazing £10,000 with 27 lots being bid on.

Monies raised by the special fun day on Sunday, May 8, at the Ring O’Bells pub and on Grove playing fields was going towards building an outdoor gym in Nailsea as a fitting memorial to the much-loved teenager.

A little over a year since a few friends had a ‘little idea’ which grew into the almighty project a location was secured for the new activity area.

With permission from Nailsea Playing Fields Association and Nailsea Town Council a plots was found in the grounds of Grove Sports Club and Social Centre, off St Marys Grove.

With the equipment orders months before the ground needed to be cleared and prepped before work could  begin.

And with a little more help from Joe Brake, Wilson Groundworks team, Flynns, Nailsea Construction, Jim Wemyss and RCG Fencing & Landscapes Ltd, a mound as big as a mountain was removed in one and a half days.

Then on Sunday, May 7, the area was officially declared open.

On this page is three slideshows of how a germ of an idea progressed into a reality.

For Toby Riley with much love

White Truffle opening night

Thursday, June 1

Nailsea's newest restaurant White Truffle opened its doors on Thursday evening, June 1, to a full house of eagerness and anticipation.
The good and the great sat down to a sumptuous menu prepared by owner and former Backwell House top chef Andy Brooks and his sous chef George Lilley.
The menu was accompanied by an extensive drinks list which included cocktails and specialty beers and ciders.
Cutting the red ribbon under an arch of grey and silver balloons was Matt and Jo Hanley, of One2one Design Group, who not only designed the new website but helped with project management giving invaluable advice on fittings and fixtures for the plush 35-seater Ivy Court venue.
Nailsea People community editor Carol Deacon and her library assistant husband Rob were among the invited guests on the first night.
Carol said: "To say the new restaurant is better than Backwell House would feel disloyal to somewhere we loved.
"But if opening night at White Truffle is anything to go by Nailsea is finally on the culinary map for fine food.
"The summer squash soup topped with coconut cream was Rob's choice from six starters while I went for White Truffle gin and beetroot cured salmon with pickled cucumber.
"Mouth-watering food heaven.
"A sharp vinergarette followed by a swallow of sweetness wrapped around slender cucumber slices - in the words of Oliver Twist 'may I have some more please'.
"We overheard someone say ‘oh goodness I like all of this’ - ditto.
"For the main dish there wasn't anything on the menu we didn't want to try but in the end it was Devon hake stacked neatly on new potatoes and lemony samphire and peas sat in a mint soup.
"My fine dining partner went for thyme roasted chicken breast with a sweet hispi cabbage, pancetta and butterbeans - with the obligatory side order of chips!
"All was washed down with a large glass of New Zealand sauvignon blanc and a Mojito cocktail.
"Despite being mad busy and the lovely staff getting to grips with everything new all was at a professional but unhurried, unflustered pace.

"Our total bill came to £78 - next time we will have puddings.

"I have already booked with my Ladies Who Lunch gang for a Saturday midday soon and can't wait to try a Sunday lunch too.

"Among fellow diners were lots of familiar faces joining Matt and Jo, entertainer and magic man Steve Burley; James and Jackie Thursby-Lucas; and Jules Richardson to name a few.

Nailsea carnival parade

Saturday, July 1

One of our favourite dates in the Nailsea social calendar is the fabulous carnival procession which for 2023 wound its way around the town centre on Saturday afternoon, July 1.

The fancy dress parade and the fair at Millennium Park is organised by a fundraising group of parents and supporters of Friends of First Nailsea Scout Group (FOFN ) on behalf of Nailsea Town Council.

Photos of the children assembling at Clevedon Road car park as fancy dress walkers tugging all manner of cardboard contractions along with decorated cars they before they  started off in the direction are in the first slideshow.

Then top led by the fire engine blue lights flashing the colourful and noisy parade arrived in Nailsea High Street flanked by lots of happy onlookers.

The farmyard theme was followed by Super Mario and a festival fantasia of sparkly costumes and fun face-painted characters.

There were many categories for different ages and groups from pre-school upwards.

But probably missing for 2023 were the older age group - sadly no WI ladies or adult sporting groups?

However, 2023 will be remembered for the happy children from schools, nurseries, dance troupes, scout troops, some lovely panto people and a convoy of charity-minded drivers behind the wheels of their VW vehicles. The bucket collection on route for 2023 is to help with the running costs of the Clevedon Road HQ,

BLEARY AND BEERY: Nothing was going to stop Nailsea people enjoying the annual beer and cider festival especially a few drops of rain as our photos show rain unlike Wimbledon! With black thunderclouds threatening and several downpours including hailstones the sun did finally come out late afternoon on the Saturday. Earlier it had been a mad dash for the beer tent several times when the heavens opened with umbrellas and waterproofs becoming the theme with lots of throwaway plastic cagoules being sported on the Nailsea & Backwell Rugby FC field. The revellers had carried on regardless of the weather at an event which has been on our social calendar since 2004. From the stage came the sounds of Shania Twain to the Beatles, from Elvis to the Wurzels and as the music rocked the band shouted ‘hello rain lovers’ as they played Chuck Berry, and Jerry Lee Lewis classics. Corvus closed the show saying 'this is the best ever' beer fest and we agreed, loved every wet and wild moment. Thank you everyone who posed for pics or loaned us their images/selfies to add to the slideshows including North Somerset MP Liam Fox, stage sponsors One2One Design Group, Nailsea Social Club stalwart Stuart Burgess and others whose names in the blur of a beer fest hangover escapes us. Special mention must go to the front and back-of-house volunteers, the bus drivers, stallholders and all the other generous sponsors for making this our number one destination for fun, food and fabulous beer, cider, prosecco, Pimms and gin. Hopefully lots of money will be made for BUST cancer charity and other worthy causes raising funds during the three day festival at West End

August farmers' market

FLOWER POWER: Nailsea Horticultural Society summer show was on Saturday afternoon, August 5, at Nailsea School. This village tradition began in 1853 in a field off Clevedon Road, moved to a marque at Golden Valley playing fields for many years and now is a one day event in the spring and summer at Nailsea School. There are nearly 200 classes from flowers to fruit, craft to baking and many trophies to be won. Joint show secretaries Martyn Davies and Jane Knight said it was well attended. As well as the exhibits there were a number stalls, fundraising raffles, homemade refreshments and the music of Filton Concert Brass Band. Nailsea Town Council chairman Mike Bird presented the trophies. Results to come...

Crown Glass shopping centre

Friday, August 18

Colliers Walk in Nailsea was transformed with lots of buzzing around the shopping centre on Friday, August 18.

It wasn't as Nailsea People thought the Crown Glass mascot Honey Bee but a strange creature with an American accent.

We are told it is Bumblebee the robot from transformers. If the idea was to increase footfall it certainly worked as young shoppers queued to say hello and take photos.

Never too old to learn as Wikipedia tells us the character is a member of the Autobots, a group of sentient, self-configuring, modular extraterrestrial robotic lifeforms.

The event attracted onlookers of all ages - see our slideshow.

Thank you everyone who shared your photos.

GOOD DAY HAD BY ALL Trendlewood team spokesman Jerry Wilkins said: "We managed to put together a fantastic fun-filled day for approximately 1,700 people. And this despite the two torrential downpours, which ironically failed to dampen people’s spirits. The team and all the volunteers created something to be proud of and we thanks everyone involved."
