Thelma Barlow.jpg

Guess who is helping her friend Nailsea town councillor Phil Barclay with his shopping pending a house move to the new McCarthy and Stone retirement complex called Bucklands?

Looking very glamorous despite her advancing years it was Thelma Barlow, aged 89, the English television actor and writer, most famous for her roles as Mavis Wilton in the long-running ITV soap opera Coronation Street and as Dolly Bellfield in the sitcom Dinnerladies.

Nailsea Town Council highways and planning committee recommended approval for 24 houses to be built on Miss Shepstone's field on Wednesday night, February 27.
Its designation for ‘community use’ was been removed by North Somerset Council in its latest strategic planning review making the scrubland a prime development site.
This tied councillors hands as no valid reason for recommending refusal could be found.
Landowners Brunelcare and St Peter's Hospice were bequeathed the field in Miss Shepstone's will but it is widely believed her intention was it should not be built on but benefit local people..
Changes could still be made to the outline planning application before the building starts including the density of homes.
Previous plans had included a community shop/building but this was removed by the developer for ‘economic’ reasons.
In January 2017 local vicar Steve Tilley put in a plea for a community building which featured on the front page of Nailsea People - you can read his words in full by clicking HERE.

Nailsea people wishing to support or object to the application can do so online by clicking HERE.

Nailsea weigh-in

A Strongest Man challenge is being staged at  the 160th North Somerset Show thanks to a Nailsea gym.

With more than 20 heavyweight contestants from all over the area due to compete, the new contest is guaranteed to pull in the crowds alongside established favourites such as cattle and horses.

The Strongest Man contest is the brainchild of Matt Bembridge, of At The Gym in Blackfriars Road, Nailsea, who will run the event in conjunction with North Somerset Show.

He said: “I have been a fan of the show for years so it’s great to be involved.

"We launched the gym back in 2017 and I had been racking my brains to come up with a way of showcasing our sports fitness skills.

“The Strongest Man contest is rooted in agriculture.

"Farmers are used to lifting bales of hay, heavy stones or calves.

"We are determined to maintain these agricultural connections at the show.”

North Somerset’s first ever Strongest Man contest will feature axle deadlifts, heavy carry medley, throwing weights, vehicle pull, log press and the ever-popular tyre flip.

The Gym Professor will present the contest alongside guest judge and West Country strongman Laurence Shahlaei – aka Big Loz from Swindon.

Matty Hudd, of the Trojan Gym, Bristol will also be on hand to help with the introductions and announcements.

Matt said: “Fitness and gym attendance are more popular than ever and we run bespoke classes for mums, school children and adults as well as the Nailsea football and rugby teams.

“But the guys who will be taking part in this competition will be on another level altogether.

"Two of them are farmers and the others do practical jobs as well as train. But we are deliberately keeping the event as family friendly as possible.”

The 160th North Somerset Show, which will be held on Bank Holiday, May 6, at The Showground, Wraxall.
