On Monday, February 17, a new play café opens in Somerset Square, Nailsea.

M.O.M Play Space will open its doors to local children aged 0-7, and their parents and carers, at 4 Somerset Square.

This is opposite the children’s play park in the town centre.

The play café is the brainchild of mum and powerhouse Holly Gocoul who ran the successful Nana’s Caribbean Cuisine for many years and is a qualified English teacher. She has recruited a very able team to help with the venture.

She said: “For children, the play café will offer developmentally focused play, with toys rotating and targeting the four areas of their development – cognitive, social, fine motor and gross motor, as well as a range of tasty things to eat and drink.

“For parents and carers, we offer good coffee, great food and (finally) a chance to have a catch up with a friend without the stressful task of having to entertain your child from the confines of a high chair.

“From late March/April, we will also offer a series of parent and child centred classes.

“For children’s cognitive development, they can find:

  • problem solving toys;

  • puzzles;

  • stacking, shape sorting;

  • reading corner;

  • and more.

“We take care of their social development by offering role play and fancy dress, as well as the opportunity to meet, play, sing and have stories with new friends. Fine motor activities include our tuff tray sensory activities, writing/drawing tables.

“Gross motor skills are covered by a small soft play area for babies and toddlers and a Montessori climbing frame for toddlers upwards.

“The play space aims to provide a solution to the lack of affordable, well equipped play centres in Nailsea and the surrounding areas.”

As a proud SEN parent, Holly is excited to be able to offer regular SEND sessions with reduced numbers and the opportunity for parents to connect and support each other as needed.

Sleep specialists, breastfeeding specialists and new parent support groups are all also expected to feature as part of the monthly timetable.

M.O.M will be open six days a week Tuesday-Sunday 9am-3pm with Sundays being exclusively for private hire of birthday parties and baby showers.

While walk-ins will be welcome if there’s space, booking is advised to guarantee a space at each of the 90-minute play sessions.

For more information, behind the scenes renovations, booking and giveaway details, you can find M.O.M on socials @m.o.m.playspace.

Nailsea Town Council wants to improve the play park at Hannah More Road and has a budget set aside of £70,000.

The plan is to renovate existing equipment and install playground furniture that caters for younger children.

Ideas range from:

  • active sensory trail

  • role play area

  • telephone tubes

  • smaller climbing frame

There is a display at 65 High Street with more information for people of all ages to give feedback or they can email comments to enquiries@nailseatowncouncil.gov.uk.

The feedback deadline is Saturday, February 15.

The newest housing developments at Netherton Grange and Engine Lane have recently opened innovative play areas.

There is another well-equipped play area at Trendlewood Community Park.

Play equipment at Millennium Park is maintained by North Somerset Council who took away the old equipment at The Perrings and never installed new.

Town councillor Claire Taylor proposed the Hannah More refurbishment which is next door to the allotments and backs onto Blackfriars trading estate.

She said: "The aim of this project is to secure a safe area for the younger

residents of Nailsea to explore, play and socialise.

"It also allows them to practice and hone their balance and co-ordination skills.

"Hannah More Park is a great space, and this project offers us the opportunity to enhance what we already have for generations to come by providing a variety of new play equipment and renovating existing structures.

"I'm excited to share our ideas, so please pop into No65 to give feedback on the plans and also to let us know what play equipment you would like to see.”

Children eat free during the February half term at the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse at Congresbury.
The offer (conditions apply*) is available at Cadbury House as long as they are accompanied by a full paying adult, they’ll get their food for nothing.
Part of the restaurant’s ambition to encourage families to take time to enjoy a meal out together, the offer is available Monday through to Friday during the half term holidays.
Marketing manager Matilda Burgess said: “Kids love to eat out, as they’re made to feel all grown up and special and we hope to see may younger diners throughout the holidays.
“The offer is also great value for money so parents, grandparents or carers can take out the young ones while not worrying too much about the overall cost.

Read a book this summer

Children in North Somerset are invited to join in the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, Story Garden which starts on Saturday, July 5.

The Summer Reading Challenge, developed by the Reading Agency, encourages children aged four to 11 to read or listen to books over the summer holidays. They can collect free rewards for reading from their local library.

The 2025 Summer Reading Challenge will finish on Saturday, September 13, and this summer, The Reading Agency invites children to step into the magical world of Story Garden.

With stunning artwork by illustrator Dapo Adeola, children will uncover stories that celebrate the great outdoors and the power of imagination.

For the first year, children under the age of four can also join the challenge and receive their own sticker collection folder and a shiny sticker medal and certificate at the end of the challenge.

North Somerset Council will be running craft events and special storytimes throughout the summer (more details from local libraries).

TOUCAN ON TOUR: The nearest Gromit Unleashed 3 art sculpture to Nailsea is Feathers McGraw, the villainous penguin from the beloved Wallace  & Gromit films who is in residence this summer at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm. It is part of public arts trail organised by The Grand Appeal, the official charity for Bristol Children’s  Hospital, in collaboration with Aardman. Named Toucan Tango, it was designed by none other than Nick Park, creator of Wallace & Gromit, and promises to be a must see highlight of the trail.
